Budget Shortfall To Hit SMCC Next Year

Issue date: 2/1/10 Section: News
Due to the state of the current economy, the Maine Community College System will see a reduction of $1.7 million for the fiscal year 2010 and the fiscal year of 2011. This budget shortfall has not affected SMCC this semester, but beginning next fall SMCC will feel the sting.
Statewide, 20 to 25 full time faculty members will more than likely be let go, and SMCC will not be immune. There is also the proposed elimination of up to four programs, affecting an estimated 440 students and resulting in a loss of tuition money received by half million dollars. It is not yet clear which community colleges will eleminate programs or which programs would be slated to go.
MCCSs Board of Trustees have established The Foundation of Maine's Community College's to help raise funds and offset the budget deficet.
